FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2nd Pacific Festival of the Book Announced

The Victoria Arts Connection is pleased to announce the 2nd Pacific Festival of the Book will take place March 10-20, 2008 in Victoria, BC, Canada. After last year’s overwhelming success the VAC book festival organizers and supporters decided to turned this into a city wide ten day festival. The Pacific Festival of the Book theme for 2008 is “A Climate of Change” exploring issues from personal to global changes which affect everyone in writing, publishing and the arts.

A major goal of the festival is to bring together the community of readers, writers, multidiscipline artists and professionals by providing a wide-range program of readings, talks, panel discussions as well as an extensive trade fair for publishers, individual writers and organizations. Rounding out the program are a two month international visual art exhibition celebrating The Art of the Book as well as hands-on technical workshops and demos that range from self-publishing business skills to composition editing, traditional book binding and a special writing workshop for youth.

In order to carry out the festival’s ambitious mandate the VAC has established synergistic relationships with others in the community including the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) and The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria (CAGV) making it possible for The Pacific Festival of the Book to offer a series of readings, panel discussions and workshops throughout the city. Other partner locations are also being researched.

Two other important aspects of the festival are to encourage youth and support literacy. To that end the festival has established PFB Press which will publish an anthology of collected writings by youth in the CRD area and will be launched on Sunday March 16, 2008 at the festival’s Group Book Launch event. Future plans for this exciting publishing project will see PFB Press publish region specific anthologies drawing from the writing of youth throughout British Columbia. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from the public events on Saturday March 15th will be donated to support the efforts of Project Literacy Victoria.

The Pacific Festival of the Book is a unique and highly accessible festival with many free events. Admission to the major public events on Saturday March 15th is only $5.00 and free for youth under 16 yrs. The Victoria Arts Connection is a registered BC non-profit society supporting a variety of multidiscipline arts activities including dance, theatre, film/video, alternative opera, visual and literary arts.
