Labour dispute at Greater Victoria Public Library affects book festival
Victoria Arts Connection’s 2nd Annual Pacific Festival of the Book may not be going forward with plans to hold events at the Greater Victoria Public Library due to the ongoing labour dispute. Staff at the GVPL have had to make tough decisions around how to proceed in light of the ongoing labour dispute and sadly have had to pull their on site programing from the festival. Plans were under way to have author readings every day leading up to the major events on March 15th at Victoria Arts Connection. The readings were part of the ‘appetizers’ for the festival aimed at getting people excited about the upcoming weekend events and a way to bring the festival out to the community and create a city-wide event.
“It is a real shame that it has come to this. The labour dispute has really dragged on long enough and the whole community would like to see a resolution. The libraries are a critical facet of the cultural community here and many people are being adversely affected – not just us.” says Heidi Bergstrom, VAC Board Chair. “I’m not sure what we will do now; the libraries are really the best partner in the community that we can have for the festival and it is unlikely that we can get another partner at this time” she adds.
The VAC organizing committee will be considering their options over the next two weeks and hopes to come up with something that won’t jeopardize the program and can also support the GVPL. The Pacific Festival of the Book will also be holding events at The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria March 13-18th that includes author presentations and an exhibition of new works based on the festival theme “A Climate of Change” by the Island Illustrators.
