LEE WEINSTEIN
Lee Weinsiein
Fernwood Publishing brings us Vancouver writer Lee Weinstein, co-editor with Richard Jaccoma of Prison Voices , an inmate-written book, made to encourage reading and writing in prisons.  Within these pages twelve convict-authors reveal the dramatic details of their lives and their struggles.

Prison Voices was proposed for the National Literacy Secretariat. The John Howard Society of Canada approached Correctional Services Canada to obtain permission for Weinstein Jaccoma to solicit writing as well as to interview, record and photograph prisoners. “At first they trickled in but we received more than 300,” says Weinstein. “We were struck by the power of the writing and awed by the challenge of reducing those to just 12.” Weinstein and Jaccoma interviewed prisoners in federal penitentiaries in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario. They found stories of hope, despair, remorse and rehabilitation, but most of all a central story of people struggling to learn.

Lee brings a particularly poignant perspective on this year's festival theme, "A Climate of Change" with his work editing Prison Voices. This work will appeal to those interested in rehabilitative writing or for inspiration as a unique and moving story that often counteracts the stereotypes of "prisoners. This work also demonstrates the inherent possibilities and unique applications of writing to change lives and make sense of the world…Appearing Saturday March 15th from 1:00-1:30pm Top
