EVENT:The Creative Non-Fiction Umbrella: How to decide which sub-genre of creative non-fiction best suits your talents and material - Lynne Van Luven

DESCRIPTION: The Creative Non-Fiction Umbrella: How to decide which sub-genre of creative non-fiction -- essay, memoir, travel writing, cultural critique, history or biography -- best suits your talents and material. Participants are invited to come to the workshop with questions about a CNF article of their own. We will discuss some of the basic questions about the genre, including how to avoid solipsism in self-based writing, how to find a definition of the form that works for your material, and what basic elements are essential to a publishable piece of creative non-fiction writing. Lynne Van Luven teaches creative non-fiction and journalism at the University of Victoria. She is the editor of the anthology Nobody's Mother, and is a freelance writer and editor.

EVENT: The Story Only You Can Tell, Memoir Writing Workshop with Sid Tafler

DESCRIPTION:
The memoir has become one of the most popular forms of non-fiction writing in North America. Well-crafted accounts of life experience by previously-unknown authors, such as Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt, appear regularly on best-seller lists. This workshop covers the secrets to accessing buried memories and shaping them into compelling stories. This workshop will focus on the essential elements of story, methods of accessing memories, finding your own voice, constructing scenes, working with dialogue and establishing and building a theme. This session will be collaborative and interactive. Writers will be invited to participate in a series of writing exercise designed to enhance creativity.

Join Christiane Lenz of the Fairbank Calligraphy Society as she takes you on a fascinating journey through the history of the written, and illuminated word. This presentation will include a slide show of calligraphy from the collection of the Fairbank Calligraphy Society and participants will have the opportunity to see historical examples of calligraphy and contemporary works by some of our local calligraphers. This session will have broad appeal to those involved in the creative arts and anyone who is interested in learning more about history.

EVENT: From Process to Product - the Art of the Illustrator with Mavis Andrews
TIME:1-3PM
DESCRIPTION:
What is involved in creating a book filled with illustrations? How do an illustrator and a book come together? Is the writer involved? Who decides what? Who pays? The Island Illustrators Society invites you to join us as Mavis Andrews of the Victoria School of Writing shares insights and techniques for illustrators, artists, designers, and others involved in the field, with a focus on children’s books.

Mavis is a freelance editor and book consultant with a strong background in graphic design and illustration. Her popular writing courses and workshops have been presented through Camosun College Continuing Education and several international writers conferences, as well as editors and writers associations and community education programs. A former editor of the Illustrator and of Focus on Women magazine, Mavis is the VP of the Victoria School of Writing. She works with writers in a wide range of fields including children's literature, and is passionate about encouraging the development of individual creativity.
