“Energetic, truthful, troubling writing that is never boring.” Gilles Marcotte, L’Actualité

In Room with Bath, we meet Eléonore, a translator of romance novels, at a pivotal moment in life. Living comfortably in Montreal with the handsome, but inaccessible, Philippe, Eléonore is unable to sustain the facade of outward happiness. Putting career and relationship behind her, she rents a modest ‘room with bath’ in a run-down neighbourhood, to reinvent herself and write. As she writes of her life, repressed memories return, until Eléonore comes to terms with the pain of the past. Originally published in French, this daring novel received several Quebec literary awards.

Montreal native Hélène Rioux is the author of five novels, popular in both France and Quebec. She divides her time between Quebec and Spain.

Jonathan Kaplansky translated Hélène Rioux’s Reading Nijinsky (introducing the character Eléonore). He now resides in Ottawa.
